When you were away
I thought I heard
Your anklets tinkle
In the darkness
And woke up startled
Did you not stop wearing them
After I told you they sounded eerie
Like in a ghost film?
In those phoneless days
The slow mail took our thoughts back and forth
And the absence was so keenly felt
That we clung to each other's words
As if our lives depended on them
The house was filled with your memories
Often tangible that I could touch them
And disappear into those days
When we first found each other
One sleepless night I retrieved your anklets
And let them walk you back to me.
